Daughters returning to farms and ranches was the topic of a conversation I was mostly listening to recently.

The statement that struck a chord with me was, “I don’t know who they are going to pass their farm to.  They only have daughters.”

Interesting thing is, as I kindly brought to his attention, returning to the farm was possible for this gentleman because he married a daughter.

Why did I remain calm? He is a baby boomer, and sometimes, you have to forgive them for they know not what they say.

He agreed he was very fortunate.

I am a daughter back on the family ranch my great-grandMOTHER homesteaded in the early 1900s.

I am not a women’s rights activist, but I do the work of a man on a daily basis and am blessed and grateful to have the managerial and entrepreneurial skills that allow me to manage the operation when the time comes.

Apparently, my great-grandmother did, also. Maybe that’s where I get it.

Many other women have this ability, too. Many men don’t.

Management of the farm/ranch should be dependent on ability not gender.

So, here’s to all the daughters back on the farm or ranch!
