May is BEEF Month…& Cinco de Mayo

This post will start a series of posts about different topics relating to BEEF and beef production.

Today’s post will talk about the Beef Checkoff.

The Beef Checkoff is a mandatory program that assesses $1/head on the sale of cattle in the US.

The aim of the program is to encourage the sale of BEEF by grocery stores and restaurants to consumers.

This is done through:

·         TV ads

·         billboards

·         recipe development

·         providing beef to middle and high school FACS classes

·         blog posts

·         educating current and future dietitians

·         promotional videos

·         education materials

·         various beef research projects such as the one that found the delicious flat iron steak in the shoulder of the beef carcass

·         and more!

So, go out and enjoy some beef fajitas to celebrate Cinco de Mayo today and thank the farmers and ranchers that produced that tasty BEEF and for their support of the Beef Checkoff program that helps promote LEAN BEEF in a balanced meal plan!
