Both Sides of The Plate
Kirsten Angell, RD, LD, CDCES, fourth generation rancher and registered dietitian, shares the science and the story of production agriculture while motivating farmers and ranchers to live healthy lives.
Wheat, Gluten, and Other “Stuff”
Unless you have one of the situations requiring going gluten-free, go enjoy all whole grains while supporting Kansas wheat farmers at the same time!
GMO…Friend or Foe?
Don’t be fooled by marketing labels for GMO’s and non-GMO’s or any other nutrition “claims” and know that GMO’s are our friend!
Strawberries—The Little Red Super Fruit
Sometimes I talk about foods when it’s time to plant them and sometimes when time to harvest them. If you have an established strawberry crop, June is the month to harvest strawberries in Kansas, but they have been “in season” in the grocery store since about March.
June is Dairy Month
Dairy month started as National Milk Month in 1937 to promote drinking milk. In 1939, June Dairy Month became the official title and focused on a broader use of milk and other dairy products.
May is BEEF Month—Make Eating Easy
Make eating easy…leave the “buddy system” by the wayside and get your complete protein by flying solo with LEAN BEEF in a well-balanced meal plan!
May is BEEF Month—Beef and Immunity
Don’t forget to include LEAN BEEF in your daily meal/snack pattern to help build immunity in the fight against covid!
May is BEEF Month…& Cinco de Mayo
Enjoy some beef fajitas to celebrate Cinco de Mayo today and thank the farmers and ranchers that produced that tasty BEEF and for their support of the Beef Checkoff program that helps promote LEAN BEEF in a balanced meal plan!
Infertility, Menopause, and Transitioning the Family Ranch—THE PERFECT STORM Part III
Decision is made to move back to family ranch with no formal plan but an informal plan to “help out” while expressing interest in preserving the family homestead.
Infertility, Menopause, and Transitioning the Family Ranch—THE PERFECT STORM Part II
Which came first…the chicken or the egg…stressful environmental and situational factors or pre-menopausal hormonal symptoms?
A vicious cycle. One exacerbates the other.
Infertility, Menopause, and Transitioning the Family Ranch—THE PERFECT STORM Part I
After 10 years, why did God lay it on my heart to want to have a baby if He wasn’t going to allow that to happen?
Turmeric: The Golden Spice
What is so “golden” about turmeric?
Is it the color used in foods and cosmetics? No.
Is it the flavoring in many Asian foods? No.
Is it the potential to help with depression? Maybe.
Or the potential to help with high triglycerides? Maybe.
Oooorrr…is it the potential to help reduce inflammation? Yeeeeesss!
Sleep: Does Nutrition Make a Difference?
Until about age 45, I slept like a rock at night, and then I started having restless nights that escalated to nights with little to no sleep. So, I decided to research sleep and factors, especially nutrition-related factors, that affect sleep quality and quantity. I want to share some of the factors.
To Meat or Not to Meat: BEEF in a Plant-Based Meal Plan
The USDA recommends, and MyPlate depicts, eating from 5 food groups. It recommends filling half of the plate with fruits and vegetables and a quarter of the plate with grains. So, ¾ of MyPlate is plant based, but it doesn’t neglect the protein and dairy groups.
How is a Registered Dietitian Different than a Nutritionist?
Anyone can call themselves a “nutritionist,” but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. The "RD" credential is a legally protected title that can only be used by practitioners who are authorized by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day—March 10
Registered dietitians are food and nutrition experts, translating the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. The expertise, training and credentials that back a registered dietitian are vital for promoting positive lifestyle choices.
National Nutrition Month™
In March, the Academy focuses attention on healthful eating through National Nutrition Month®. This year’s theme, Personalize Your Plate, promotes creating nutritious meals to meet individuals’ cultural and personal food preferences.

It’s Production Sale Week
Located in the short grass country of western Kansas, Lundgren Angus Ranch (LAR) is a family owned and operated registered Angus and Red Angus herd committed to producing seedstock that will meet the ever-increasing demands of today's commercial cow/calf producer and the beef industry.
Best. Swim. Ever.
Maybe it was the new goggles. Maybe it was the full night of sleep I finally got the night prior. Maybe it was being properly fueled for the activity.
THAT is what I want to talk about in this post…being properly fueled for activity.
